Meet our Instructors

Andrew Shorkey

General Manager

Graduated from McGill University with a BSc in Physiology and a minor in Economics, Andrew was the winner of the Ivan Tennant Award for the top academic high school player in the OHL. From 2005-2007, he played for the Owen Sound Attack in the OHL. Previously the manager of NTR Richmond Hill for 5 years, Andrew is currently an OMHA and GTHL AA/AAA coach. As a high level skills instructor, he is the head coach for CCIHA, and has coached internationally multiple times.

Ben Alavie

Manager & Lead Instructor

Ben Alavie has been the manager of NTR Newmarket for the past two years. A graduate of York University, Ben is currently pursing his MsC in Sports Psychology and Concussion research at the University of Toronto. For the past 6 years, Ben has been a AAA coach for the Richmond Hill Coyotes organization. Previous to this, between 2007-2010 he played for the Brampton Battalion in the OHL.

Dave Mooney

Power Skating and Skills

Currently coaching the junior varsity program at The Hill Academy, he is also the assistant coach for the Aurora Tigers (provincials Jr.A). During the 2015-2015 season, Dave was the assistant coach for the North York Rangers (provincial Jr. A). Adding to his portfolio of being a hockey skills instructor for various teams and programs for the past 9 years, he spent 2 years running the Seneca College Hockey camp as their program director. Dave played varsity hockey for 3 years for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

 

Jeff Murray

Power Skating and Skills

Received a full scholarship to play Division 1 Hockey at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Jeff graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management Administration, Health and Physical Education. Earned Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team distinction in all 4 seasons. Achieved AHCA All-American Scholar Award in each year since its inception in 2016. After school, Jeff went on to play pro hockey in the ECHL for the Brampton Beast and the Cincinnati Cyclones.

Allison Baxter

Learn to Skate

Allison is a Gold Medalist figure skater who has over 5 years of NTR Learn to Skate experience. She has 15 years of coaching experience with figure skating and power skating, including the Powertech Powerskating School. Allison is a York University graduate with a BA in English. Continuing her education she graduated from Lakehead University from the BEd program. Allison is an experienced OCT certified teacher with the YRDSB. As well, she has 7 years of experience in children's recreational programs with the King township.

 

Lisa Bellmore

Learn to Skate

Lisa comes from a skating family where both her parents taught skating. Lisa has been teaching for 23 years and is a Provincial Level Coach. Lisa is a Triple Gold Medalist, she has her Junior Competitive, and skated competitively until she was 18 years old. Lisa teaches all levels of skating from Pre-School, CanSkate, to StarSkate and Power Skating. Lisa is very focused on building the skater's basic skills in order to achieve their success.

Greg Redquest

Goaltending Director

Greg brings 30+ years of coaching experience to his 22nd year as the NTR Head Goalie Instructor. He works with a wide skill range, from beginner goalies to National Team athletes such as the Barrie Colts and York University OUA. Currently Greg is the head goalie coach for 2011 OHL Championship team, Owen Sound Attack. Previously playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Oshawa Generals, Greg was an OHL All-Star goalie and the first goalie selected in the 1976 draft. His goalies have won the Dave Pinkney Trophy twice and the CHL Goalie of the Year for 3 times.

Chris Mackinnon

Power Skating and Skills

Chris played 4 years in the OHL where he amassed 254 points in 250 games. He then attended St. Mary's University when he received a finance degree while playing Varsity Hockey. He has been instructing for over 8 years during and after his hockey career. His area of expertise is stickhandling, power skating and goal scoring. He loves to run creative sessions where a puck is always on your stick and everything finishes with a shot on net. Coming to see Chris will guarantee your hockey players comes out more confident and with big smiles on their faces.
